Go for Broke follows the exploits of the most decorated unit in US Army history - the 442nd Regiment - the first all-Nisei (Japanese-American) combat team in WWII. Van Johnson stars as a commanding officer who must overcome his own prejudices as he trains and leads his men through battles on the European Front. Several of the main roles are played by actual Nisei members of the 442nd, lending a beautiful authenticity to the storytelling. Go for Broke represents a landmark in the portrayal of Japanese-Americans in Hollywood films and is a must watch for WWII history and war movie buffs alike. Director: Robert Pirosh Writer: Robert Pirosh Starring: Van Johnson, Lane Nakano, George Miki, Akira Fukunaga, Ken K. Okamoto, Henry Oyasato, Harry Hamada
Watch the 1951 Hollywood classic movie, Go for Broke!. The story of Japanese-American soldiers who fought in Europe during World War II. Movie Name: Go for Broke! Stars: Van Johnson, Lane Nakano, George Miki Director: Robert Pirosh
"Go for Broke!" is a 1951 black-and-white WW2 war film starring Van Johnson and six veterans of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The film co-stars Henry Nakamura, Warner Anderson, and Don Haggerty in its large cast. Presented here for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The film dramatizes the real-life story of the 442nd, which was composed of Nisei (second-generation Americans born of Japanese parents) soldiers. Fighting in Italy as part of the 100th Infantry Battalion of the 34th Division. The phrase "Go for broke" is used in Hawaii meaning to gamble everything, to "shoot the works" or to risk "going broke" or bankruptcy. Fighting in the European theater during World War II, this unit became the most heavily decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the United States Army, as well as one of the units with the highest casualty rates. This film is a Hollywood rarity for its era in that it features Asian Americans in a positive light, highlighting the wartime efforts of Japanese Americans on behalf of their country even while that same country confined their families in camps. As with his earlier film script for the near-masterpiece "Battleground," in which Van Johnson also starred, writer-director Robert Pirosh focuses on the average squad member, mixing humor with pathos, while accurately detailing equipment and tactics used by American infantry in World War 2. The contrast of reality versus public relations, the hardships of field life on the line, and the reality of high casualty rates are accurately portrayed with a minimum of heroics. Originally released in theaters on May 24, 1951. For education, entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration. We hope you enjoy! Go for Broke (1951) Van Johnson stars in this story of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. A Japanese American combat unit who fought across Europe.
The 442nd Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment is best known for its history as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei) who fought in World War II.
Astro Tortolano, a World War II veteran and member of the 141st Infantry Regiment, recalls the grim conditions he and his unit faced after being surrounded by German soldiers. This battalion of the 141st would eventually be relieved by Japanese American soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team after days of brutal fighting.
