The Half Life 2 VR Mod is incredible. Half life 2 is great on it's own, and probably the greatest game ever made as of 2004. But putting Half Life 2 in VR makes the gameplay just as engaging today as it was 2 decades ago. I've never played this Half Life 2 before and I still got nostalgic. That's how good Half Life is. The story of Half Life is brand new to me, I get to have fun with the physics puzzles because they are in VR now. I cannot wait to continue playing through the game. Hopefully you found it funny or maybe just somewhat humorous. Apart from the airboat section that made me queasy, I had a grand time with this mod and editing it just made me want to play more. Even with some jankiness, particularly with the platforming and the swimming, the actual gameplay is crazy fun, and seeing all the cool moments in Half Life 2 brought to VR is incredible. HALF LIFE VR is a hilarious and terrifying nightmare, being fully immersed into a world where the disproportioned characters all move like frozen LEGO people and their mouths flap open like fish monsters isn't what I was expecting when this new VR mod was announced...but it's definitely what we've got! Half Life 2 in the perfect VR game and soon the AMAZING Half Life 2 Episode 1 VR mod will be available and free for everyone who owns Episode 1! It almost feels crazy to call this a VR mod when it feels as good as it does to play, runs so smoothly, looks gorgeous and includes a full suite of comfort options for players of all experience levels! I’m not saying it’s easy or that small teams, like the Half-Life 2 VR modding team, should or even can work on difficult solutions. -I want to preempt a few possible critiques of this vid: 1) I don’t think you can use Half-Life’s lore to excuse Alyx’s simplified design. By this I mean: Gordon’s hazard suit gave him abilities (like sprinting) that Alyx doesn't have because she is not wearing a hazard suit. But I’m sure there could’ve been ways to write around this and make Alyx play faster and closer to Half-Life 2. 2) I ask, at the end, what Alyx would look like if it were more robust of a game. Boneworks, by Stress Level Zero, is a more robust VR game, but that doesn’t mean that a hypothetical “more complex” Alyx would play or look like Boneworks. Boneworks is an experimental physics sandbox. Its single player is a ton of fun, but it’s not meant to be a game as much as it is to show off crazy VR physics and silliness. There is a place for that, but there is also a place for more refined, curated experiences that are less about experimentation and emergent gameplay. -When I went back and watched my original video about Alyx, I was surprised how positive my initial reaction was. My opinion must have soured on Alyx over the years somewhat or (and I believe this is the case) at the time I wasn't skilled enough to better articulate my mixed opinion. I also wanted to get that video out relatively close to when the game was released, so that probably added to it as well. Believe it or not, I've never played Half Life before. So I'm starting a blind Let's Play series! I'm obviously new at this game, so I'll happily take any tips/tricks you might have. Below is the link to the VR mod I'm using, and the Steam page where I bought the game. I've recently been contacted by the original author of the VR mod. Some notes from them are below. The VR Mod → 🤍 Half Life on Steam → 🤍 (You’ll need to disable “Use Desktop Game Theatre while SteamVR is active” in the Half-Life Properties in Steam) ● Chat about VR on my Discord → 🤍 ● Twitter → 🤍 Notes from the Mod author: 1. The mod you are playing is a custom build by some developers who found super early source code on my github page. They made a build for testing purposes, which then got spread by curious people. It was never intended in any way as a public release to be played by average users, but now after almost 2 years it seems that people think this was an actual mod release. It was not. The version you are playing was literally one, maybe two weekends of work + weapon models that were done by different people, not me. It was the earliest "proof of concept" for VR with the GoldSrc engine and I released the code (and a short Youtube video) as a technical demonstration. 2. Due to the aftermath of the aforementioned point (which we can now also see in some of those unfortunate comments under your videos), in December 2017 I moved the code and any further development of the mod into a private repo on github, disclosed from the public. I will release the mod, including its source code, when it is stable and playable, not before. (And no, I cannot and will not give a release estimate.) 3. The mod is still in active development. It was never abandoned, and while progress is slow due to life and other obligations (after all this is just an unpaid hobby project), progress is happening. 4. The version you are playing is open source and the license allows anyone to make a build (like the one you are playing). Even if I did abandon the mod (which I have absolutely no plans of doing), I would make the current private version publicly available. 5. I ineptly bumbled my way into a (mostly) functional way to play Half-Life co-op in VR with working VR weapons and thought I should share. Addon collection- 🤍 Github- 🤍 I can't find a lot of the information that I used to get this to work, but the main ones were. Half-Life Co-op- 🤍 This is an addon that you'll be downloading through the collection anyway, but it's worth mentioning again because the information in the comments and discussions helped me a lot. The author (upset) has done a brilliant job of adapting this campaign and making it less Half-Life Source-y. He has a Youtube (🤍 and seems pretty active, so go show him some appriciation. Half-Life 2 VR- 🤍 I know this is about Half-Life 2, but a lot of the information was very helpful and was a great launching off point. Thanks scrabdogg.

There's so much to mention about the Half Life 2 VR mod, but this one detail of reloading your weapons yourself is giving us as players so much more gameplay and immersion than we could have ever hoped for in Half Life 2 as a flat screen to VR mod. Change Log: Collisions a). In the original HLA build, when you run it by using the novr command, the player clips & teleport clips (invisible walls that blocks the player from accesing some not-allowed areas) are not working properly. A fix was made at the engine level in order to solve globally this issue. b). In the original HLA build, there are parts (in mostly all the maps) in which the player gets completely stuck, and you need to use NOCLIP in order to restore the player position. This was fixed by resoring the original engine function that checks for player "stuckness". c). In the original HLA build, the doors trespass the player. Now all the door entities should collide in a proper way with the player collision bounds. Script Generated Ladders In order to get working novr ladders (on the original HLA build), you need to add a specific "ladder" texture to a specific entity and then re-build the map. This can be a heavy and long process due the map compilation time. In this mod we're not re-building or modifying the game maps, everything is being done by using a combination of LUA VScript, C, and other tools. That's why I decided to write a small ladder system that's using some existing functions in the engine to get working the novr ladders in this way.(this is possible due the dll-injection). Panorama Menu The main menu/pause menu is fully functional now. In the original HLA build the menu is appearing outside of the map bounds and it has a lot of issues like: -You cannot interact with the menuy -Panorama is not working when the game is paused -Mouse input is not working -The menu is flickering and changing to different positions constanly All of those issues were solved: -Now the menu appears in front of the player's eyes position. -Mouse input is working (including clicks) -Panorama menu is not flickering and the position is not chaning anymore Interactions No VR Interaction system for the animprop_interactable entities were re-written, now all the interactions should be smoother and work "almost" properly (I say almost, because there are some specific entities that are not working at 100% yet).
