These are essentially two different ways that files are referenced on a hard drive, with the former pointing to the file itself and the latter directed towards the name of the file. There are two primary types of links on a Linux OS 10: hard and soft (sometimes referred to as “symbolic”). A hard link begins with referencing a file that points to a specific spot on a hard drive where that data is stored. When you create a second file that points to the same location, it’s referred to as a hard-linked file. These two files behave separately except for one crucial distinction: when you change the data on one file, it updates the data in the other to reflect the changes. In a soft link, the original file is still located at a specific point on the hard drive. Differences between soft and hard link in linux systems. The video reflexes some important concepts: inode, link count,.... The most important difference between hard link and soft link is when remove or delete file is done. Removing an original file after a hard link has been created, doesn't delete the file: we can access the file using the hard link. The file is only removed when link counter is equal to zero (last hard link or file is deleted). If we create only soft links, when the original file is removed, the soft link are also unavailable: we can list the soft links using ls command, but the data is not available: no such file or directory error when accessing to its content!

In this video, I will show you how to easily create Symbolic Links & Junctions. I will cover Hard Links in a future tutorial. #NOTE# In this video, I do NOT show you how to delete symlinks. To do this, all you have to do is right click on the files/folders with either the green arrow (Symbolic Link) or the chain (Junction) and select 'Delete' just as you would with a normal shortcut file. This works exactly the same way for Hard Links.
