On 3 January 2023, Singapore said goodbye to one of the most iconic landmarks, Jurong Bird Park. Losing Landmarks followed the last day of operations at the park before it was shuttered exactly 52 years since it opened, capturing the historical milestones of this park through the people who helped to set this remarkable park that was once the world’s largest walk-in aviary, with over 600 free-flying birds. Lim Hee, an assistant bird curator who helped selected the birds for the opening day of the park, retold stories of the magnificent manmade waterfall which was once the world’s tallest. Mohd Saad, a trainer who looks after one of the park’s oldest cockatoo, Big John, clings on with anticipation to see if the star of Jurong Bird Park will cooperate for one last performance. The newest wildlife park in Singapore is ready to welcome its "early bird" visitors! Over the next two weeks, some groups can get a sneak peek of Bird Paradise ahead of its official opening. 95% of Bird Paradise's inhabitants have made their great migration from the previous park in Jurong to the new one in Mandai. There are now twice as many aviaries that visitors can walk through. More aviaries also means more space for the park's 3,500 residents to spread their wings. Bird Paradise opens on May 8. I went for a sneak preview of Bird Paradise at Mandai Wildlife Park last Saturday ahead of its opening on 8 May! Bird Paradise is Asia’s largest bird park spanning 17 hectares and houses 3,500 birds from more than 400 species. There will be a S$10 discount on tickets for children and adults during the soft opening period until 26 May. We have been eagerly awaiting the new Bird Paradise. We were huge fans of the Bird Park over in Jurong, with Jonty having gone as a kid and then taking our kids over the years. So we were very excited and maybe a little apprehensive as to what to new park would be like. We spent all day at the Bird Paradise meandering through the huge aviaries that now home the birds in a variety of incredibly themed areas. We stayed until after the park closed determined to see all we could. With new play areas, water play and an enormous amphitheatre for presentations there is so much to see and do. Why are we at Asia's largest bird park while in Singapore, 2022? Because Jurong Bird Park was included in our Parkhopper pass! Because it's our first ever bird park visit! Plus there are a TON of birds here that we can't see in Minnesota (or anywhere else in the world, probably!). The most important question from the video...what in the world is the awesome smelling plant or tree that smells like nuts/coffee/caramel/rum?! I must know. DON'T MISS THE OTHER 3 ZOOS: 🤍 We start the park with some penguins, who make this strange squawking sound, before moving on to a giant bird - one of the largest we've ever seen, and with a beak to match! Then we need to already stop for lunch, and we manage to find a vegetarian place immediately outside the Jurong Bird Park entry gates. It's called The Social Kitchen, and it's a kitchen with a mission. The food was honestly fantastic, especially given how close it is to a zoo. In the afternoon, we enjoy the High Flyers Show, which was far more entertaining than we expected it to be. Check out how enthusiastic Bill is about it! We also really love the Lory Loft, with all its colorful birds. In Wings of Asia, we encounter the mating ritual of the Western Crowned Pigeon. Not only is this the prettiest PIGEON I've ever seen, but their mating ritual involves this low humming sound (no sound effect was added to that section of video). We fly through Parrot Paradise (sorry, I couldn't resist) before heading to the MASSIVE Waterfall Aviary. It's astonishing that this zoo has a cage large enough to enclose a waterfall. I can't imagine how that was constructed! On our way out, we stop at the Breeding and Research Center, where we're fortunate enough to see some Sun Conure baby birds being fed at the end of the day.
