Lately, there has been talk of a new largest black hole, named Phoenix A*, which is said to have a mass greater than 100 billion times the mass of the sun! This is much larger than the previous record holder, TON-618. But can we really rely on this prediction? And if not, then what is the largest black hole out there, and how do we know its true size? Black holes are the universe at its most extreme: matter and energy crunched so small they literally exit the known universe. Scientists are beginning to suspect that these monsters have a powerful impact on galaxies, solar systems and space-time itself. And now, researchers are finally getting a grip on these black holes with a new generation of high-tech laser systems and advanced telescopes in space. 'Black Hole' will trace the life cycle of a black hole - and the quest to understand it - from its violent birth in the early universe, to the final moments of Time itself. Watch the Q&A here: 🤍 Subscribe for regular science videos: 🤍 In this talk Chris Clarkson describes how cosmological surveys map the vast cosmic web of galaxies on scales so far only envisaged in computer simulations. Unravelling this delicate web will reveal not only the nature of the Big Bang itself, but the essence of dark energy — and with it, the future of the Universe. This talk was recorded at the Ri on 25 April 2023. 00:00 Intro 01:58 Mapping our solar system and galaxy 8:16 Looking at other galaxies 13:08 Mapping the universe with galaxy surveys 15:32 What does the whole universe look like? 23:22 A timeline of the universe’s evolution 25:42 How do we know what the universe looks like? 27:28 Einstein’s theory of gravity 30:28 Spacetime bends and moves 33:40 Black holes predicted by Einstein 35:35 Gravitational waves 37:58 The universe is expanding – how fast? 40:02 The evidence for dark matter 41:48 The evidence for dark energy 43:35 How much is the universe expanding over time? 45:01 How can we explain the structure of the universe? 53:18 The mystery of dark energy and dark matter 56:33 Inflation at the big bang 57:39 The next generation of surveys Chris Clarkson is a cosmologist working at Queen Mary University of London. He works mainly on the theory of large scale structure of the universe but has worked on many aspects of gravity and cosmology, including the big bang, gravitational waves and black holes. He is currently Head of the Astronomy Unit at QMUL, having previously worked at the University of Cape Town as Head of the Cosmology Group. Black holes have taken center stage in both theoretical and observational physics over the past ten years. Theoretically, they are believed to follow a precise but enigmatic set of laws that suggest they are simultaneously both the simplest and most complicated objects in the universe. This was demonstrated half a century ago by Stephen Hawking and others. Recent developments on this conundrum have been compelling. Finally and vividly spotted in the sky, they have been observed, including at LIGO and the Event Horizon Telescope. The likelihood of future advancement on both fronts depends on emergent symmetries developing close to the black holes. There will be a basic explanation of these topics' components and how they interact. #cosmos #universe #space

Somewhere in our galaxy, at some time in the future, a spacecraft from Earth will encounter the most dangerous object in the Universe. A stunning visual journey into black holes, their structure and their creation. A black hole is a geometrically defined region of spacetime exhibiting such strong gravitational effects that nothing, including particles and electromagnetic radiation such as light, can escape from inside it. The theory of general relativity predicts that a sufficiently compact mass can deform spacetime to form a black hole.

Black holes are fascinating in so many ways- especially when you put two of them together. Their resonance and orbit physically ripples space itself, emitting waves that can travel through space for billions of years. Since 2016, we have been able to detect these gravitational wave events, and earlier this month, we detected a record-breaking one. Black holes have frequently been used as a story device in science fiction, sometimes depicted as portals to alternate universes or as means of time travel. But what happens if we remove the fiction? What actually occurs within those terrifying remote entities? Black holes, also known as singularities, are enormous gravity wells that warp space-time due to their very dense singularities at their centers. A dying star rapidly collapses inward. A supernova, or catastrophic outflow of the star's outer material, results from its impending collapse. The dying star keeps collapsing until it turns into a singularity, which has zero volume and infinite density. This seemingly incomprehensible contradiction is what gives rise to a black hole.

Scientists Found a Black Hole So Huge It's Redefining Astronomy

Astronomers have made a ground-breaking discovery of an ultra-massive black hole that’s 32 billion times the mass of the Sun. This black hole is so huge that its event horizon, the point of no return for matter and light, spans a diameter that’s 1300 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun. This means if it were placed at the center of the solar system, its edge would lie way beyond interstellar space. The ultra-massive black hole is located at the heart of a galaxy in the central region of a massive cluster, 2.7 billion light-years away from us. What's most remarkable is that astronomers utilized a never-before-used technique to measure the black hole's mass, marking a historic achievement in the field. So how did astronomers determine the mass of the black hole? How is it even possible to find the black hole’s properties without actually observing it? Finally, and most importantly, why is this result so important for astronomy? The 56th episode of the Sunday Discovery Series answers all these questions. FOR COPYRIGHT ISSUES CONTACT:Mmarmelonic🤍gmail.com Astrophysics, the branch of science that seeks to understand the universe and the way it works, has long been interested in the mysterious concept of black holes. Black holes are regions in space with such immense gravitational pull that nothing, not even light, can escape from them. Their existence was first theorized through Einstein's theory of general relativity in the early 20th century, and over the years, extensive research and observations have reinforced their significance in our understanding of the cosmos. One of the tools researchers use to figure out the realities of space, is the James Webb Space Telescope. And while it wasn’t actually meant to study black holes, since the focus is on the entirety of observable space, it’s bound to pick up information about black holes too. But the problem is, the information it’s picked up, is the exact opposite of what we were expecting. Brian Greene has just confirmed the recent findings and turns out, according to the James Webb Space Telescope, black holes aren’t real! Join us as we bring you all the details about this shocking discovery and how it’s turned the world of science upside down. This is Future space! One day we might fall into a black hole. Here’s what we can expect, according to physicist Janna Levin. Subscribe to The Well on YouTube ► 🤍 Watch Janna Levin’s next interview ► 🤍 Black holes should be thought of as "empty places" rather than "dense objects." While they are indeed formed from incredibly dense objects (collapsed stars), the black hole itself is nothing. Black holes could have played a crucial role in the emergence of life. Ironically, the Solar System is in orbit around a supermassive black hole located in the center of our Milky Way galaxy. And one day, we might fall into a black hole.
