These composers were among the greatest pianists of the 19th century, and they were born at a time when the piano was a relatively modern instrument, and composers such as Hummel, Moscheles (Mendelssohn’s friend), Kalkbrenner and Ries were accorded adulation similar to pop stars today. Beethoven commenced his career in the 1790s as a virtuoso pianist. No surprise then that the young Mendelssohn composed extensively for his chosen instrument from the outset. From early concertos and sonatas he quickly established his ‘mature’ style in works such as the Rondo capriccioso, and the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato. The masterpieces that followed include the remarkably imposing Variations serieuses and the famous Songs without Words. Mendelssohn’s style did not change throughout his short creative life – he very quickly composed in what we know as his mature style from his early teens, something even Mozart didn’t achieve. This album contains the Songs without Words, Variations serieuse, Kinderstucke, Rondo capriccioso, Capriccio, and Trois Fantasies ou Caprices plus several shorter works. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, born on February 3, 1809, in Hamburg, Germany, was a prodigious composer, pianist, and conductor of the Romantic era. Coming from a wealthy and culturally influential family, Mendelssohn was introduced to music at an early age and displayed exceptional talent. His grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was a renowned philosopher, while his father, Abraham, was a banker. Recognizing his musical gifts, Mendelssohn's parents provided him with a comprehensive education in music, languages, literature, and the arts. He received piano lessons from his mother and studied composition under the tutelage of Carl Friedrich Zelter, a prominent musician and friend of the family. Mendelssohn's musical abilities flourished rapidly, and he began composing and performing publicly in his early teens. In 1829, at the age of 20, Mendelssohn conducted a revival performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. Matthew Passion," which had been largely forgotten at the time. This monumental event sparked a widespread revival of interest in Bach's music and firmly established Mendelssohn as a leading figure in the musical world. Throughout his career, Mendelssohn composed a diverse range of works, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, oratorios, and choral compositions. His compositions, often characterized by their lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and expressive qualities, exemplified the Romantic spirit. Mendelssohn's best-known works include his "Violin Concerto in E minor," the "Hebrides Overture" (also known as "Fingal's Cave"), and his "Italian Symphony." He also composed the incidental music for William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which features the famous "Wedding March" that is still played at weddings to this day. In addition to his compositional prowess, Mendelssohn was an accomplished conductor. He served as the music director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany, from 1835 until his death. Under his leadership, the orchestra achieved great acclaim and became one of the finest in Europe. Tragically, Mendelssohn's life was cut short. He suffered from poor health throughout his later years and died at the age of 38 on November 4, 1847. Despite his relatively short life, Mendelssohn's contributions to music were immense. His compositions continue to captivate audiences with their beauty, elegance, and emotional depth, ensuring his enduring legacy as one of the most important composers of the Romantic era. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. His best-known works include the overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (which includes his "Wedding March"), the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio St. Paul, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, the mature Violin Concerto and the String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions. Mendelssohn's grandfather was the renowned Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, but Felix was initially raised without religion. He was baptised at the age of seven, becoming a Reformed Christian. He was recognised early as a musical prodigy, but his parents were cautious and did not seek to capitalise on his talent. His sister Fanny Mendelssohn received a similar musical education and was a talented composer and pianist in her own right; some of her early songs were published under her brother's name and her Easter Sonata was for a time mistakenly attributed to him after being lost and rediscovered in the 1970s. Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany, and revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, notably with his performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. He became well received in his travels throughout Europe as a composer, conductor and soloist; his ten visits to Britain – during which many of his major works were premiered – form an important part of his adult career. His essentially conservative musical tastes set him apart from more adventurous musical contemporaries such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Charles-Valentin Alkan and Hector Berlioz. He is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era. #mendelssohn #classicalmusic #piano

00:00 : début du concert 1:30 : I. Allegro molto appassionato 14:38 II. Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was one of the most extraordinary child prodigies in history. At age 15 he was declared by his teacher Carl Zelter a mature musician “in the brotherhood of Bach, Mozart and Haydn”. By that age he had already composed symphonies, choral works, Singspiele, 4 concertos, piano and organ works. Mendelssohn wrote his 4 Piano Quartets (for piano and string trio) between 1821 and 1824 (between his 12th and 15th year..), forming his Opus 1, 2 and 3. Clearly modelled on Mozart’s Classical Style, they are vintage Mendelssohn: brilliant, virtuoso, containing clever counterpoint, strongly melodic both in the fast movements as in the slow movements (characteristic “Lieder ohne Worte”), the Scherzi foreshadowing his Sommernachtstraum music. Played with fire and youthful enthusiasm, as well as tenderness and lyricism by pianist Matteo Fossi and Duccio Ceccanti, Edoardo Rosadini and Alice Gabiani. Composer: Felix Mendelssohn Artist: Quartetto Klimt Early, little-known, free-spirited chamber works from music’s supreme teenage genius. By the time Felix Mendelssohn composed his first three opus-numbered works he had a substantial catalogue of chamber, vocal and orchestral works to his credit – all at the age of 15! This trio of piano quartets predates the miraculous Octet for strings, yet each of them holds its distinct appeal. A fluent grasp of form and voicing can be taken for granted in one already thoroughly schooled in compositional technique. Mendelssohn was still finding his own voice, melodically speaking, while emerging from the shadow of Mozart’s and Beethoven’s, but these are already pieces with his fingerprints and no-one else’s, even in 1824, when Beethoven and Schubert were still alive. Even the Opp. 1-3 are predated by another piano quartet, composed in 1821 by the 12-year-old Mendelssohn. He deemed it unfit for publication, but its relative brevity demonstrates that the teenage composer already had both the intuition and the talent to write within strict self-imposed boundaries: he does not waste notes, even in the finales which fizz with fun. Outside complete box-sets of the composer’s music the Piano Quartets are rarely encountered on disc, making this fine new recording an even more attractive acquisition for Mendelssohn fans and enthusiasts for early-Romantic chamber rarities. Formed in 1995, the Quartetto Klimt is an Italian ensemble with an impressive record of appearances at prestigious festivals based at home and abroad and long experience of teaching at chamber-music centres such as Fiesole and Livorno. This album marks their debut on Brilliant Classics. Fauré - Requiem Op.48, Pie Jesu, In Paradisium, Libera Me, Sanctus .. Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto No.1 in G Minor, Op.25 (Thibaudet)

20.08.2017

A superb performance of Mendessohn’s incredible (read: all-round awesome, stupidly earwormish) first piano concerto. Mendelssohn has a (not incorrect) reputation as a classicist among the romantics, but this work demonstrates why that really should count as high praise. This piano concerto pulses with heady vigour and energy, and has that very rare Mozartean trait of having complete expressive ease. The first movement throbs with tension, with a beautifully lyrical second theme; the second movement, if it were written by Beethoven, would probably be called profound, moving, even spiritual; and the third movement is a breathlessly high-spirited, completely unpretentious expression of virtuoso exuberance that picks you up and never lets you off till the very end. And despite Mendelssohn not really having a reputation as a great innovator, this concerto’s engagement with form is surprisingly sophisticated: the exposition, development, and recapitulation in the first movement are modified for utmost conciseness (even people who find sonata form repetitive will find nothing repetitive in this movement); the second movement’s middle section is cunningly disguised as an ending-cadence of the first; and the ABABA rondo of the finale not only incorporates material from earlier movements with total naturalness (there is no sense of Mendelssohn doing structure for its own sake) or but develops both main themes cleverly at each return. Thibaudet’s hyper-intense playing is a welcome change from the many (admittedly very good) recordings where this concerto is played brilliantly, but also treated as a bit of light entertainment: the con fuoco of the first movement has a white-hot intensity yet remains crystal clear, with real bite and drama; the second movement is melting; and the third is wonderfully fleet-footed and vivacious, with impressively delicate pianissimos (I find it hard to listen to it once without wanting to listen to it again). Neither is there anything timid about the accompaniment from the Gwendhausorchester Leipzig: their sound is uncompromising, full-bodied, and very detailed: listen to the opening of the rondo, for instance. 00:00 – Mvt 1, Molto allegro con fuoco 06:50 – Mvt 2, Andante 13:33 – Mvt 3, Presto* MVT 1 EXPOSITION 00:00 – After a surprisingly short tutti, Theme (Group) 1 enters 01:45 – Theme 2, which is surprisingly free-ranging in key. At 2:46 Theme 1 interrupts, before Theme 2 returns at 2:57 with flowing semiquaver accompaniment 03:22 – Transition DEVELOPMENT 03:47 – T.1 by orchestra, with piano accompaniment 04:05 – T.2 04:11 – T.2 diverted and compressed, with T.1 passingly in orchestra RECAPITULATION 04:20 – Tutti, (T.1) now extended 04:44 – T.2 04:56 – T.2, in minor, with semiquaver accompaniment 05:02 – This sounds like it should lead to the ending, but… 05:27 – Extended pianistic pyrotechnics (based on T.1’s rhythm) lead into a statement of T.1 in LH, and then to the CODA 05:40 – T.1 and then T.2 (minor, at 5:52) stated forcefully by the orchestra 06:03 – What appears to be the closing cadence is suddenly interrupted by a G maj chord, which wanders (with B as pivot note) into E min 06:20 – A brief cadenza leads directly into MVT II 06:50 – Brief introduction 07:03 – A Section, with long cadential theme at 9:30 which slips almost imperceptibly into the 09:46 – B Section. Note its harmonically exploratory nature. The passage beginning at 10:00 is one of the most beautiful in the concerto repertoire 11:29 – A Section. The melody returns, now with more elaborate pianistic accompaniment. At the melody’s repeat the piano states it simply. 12:49 – Cadential theme and close MVT III 13:33 – Introduction. Note how this recalls the false closing cadence of the opening movement, as well as the opening tutti 14:23 – Theme 15:00 – Episode 1 (very ear-wormish, this material!) 16:12 – Theme 16:36 – Episode 2 16:49 – Theme (with some development at 17:00) 17:13 – Episode 3, in sparkling dialogue between piano and orchestra (with developmental elements, such as minor section at 17:31) 17:40 – Theme. At 17:49, interruption from orchestra with T.1 from first movement 18:03 – Quotation of T.2 from first movement 18:16 – CODA. At 18:42 quotation from Episodic Theme, at 19:09 from T.1 of first movement, and at 19:23 from the head of the rondo’s theme.

#Mendelssohn #Elias #concert PART I 1:55 Introduction - So wahr der Herr, der Gott Israels lebet 2:52 Overture 6:27 1. Thank you :) 🤍 Danielle Laval: " For love of this composer, for his virtuosity, his melodic line, his cheerfulness and his romanticism. Naturally, his 'romances without words' came to me. These romances seem to me to be at the same time shrouded in classical influences and romantic collorations, succinct and delicate, poetic and often melancholic, colours that remind me of this line from Verlaine's Romances: 'Music before all else'. The composer's personal moods are present in his music: regrets, disillusionment, melancholy, loneliness, but also, in counterpoint, hope, dreaming, consolation and gaiety, in short: life. Mendelssohn's palette of feelings is set in a world of folk dances and songs, of representations of nature, thus giving it an eminently romantic dimension. How can one not be moved by these concise pieces, this refined music of such expressive poetic depth? How can I not be inspired by the pure pleasure Mendelssohn offers me? As a child prodigy he stands out from other famous examples such as Mozart, Saint-Saëns, and Britten as he reached musical maturity so quickly – probably only Korngold can rival his precocious abilities. The two works on this CD are prime examples. Both were composed in the years 1824/5 when Mendelssohn was in his sixteenth year. The sheer effortlessness of the Octet, its textures, and the seamless way he writes for the 8 players has never been surpassed. Mendelssohn’s inspiration to compose a work for 8 string players was probably inspired by the Double Quartets of Spohr. However, the older composer deliberately wrote for two groups of 4 players, and made little attempt to meld the 8 into an orchestral unit. The sextet is almost a piano concerto, and the dazzling writing he gives the piano illustrates not only Mendelssohn’s prowess as a virtuoso, but also how well he had studied his older contemporary’s music, especially Hummel and Moscheles. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy - Piano Trio no.1 in d-minor, op.49 (1839/40) Composed in 1839 and revised several times until its final form being published in 1840, this dramatic and brilliant, yet utterly personal work immediately became wildly popular (though at first only in Leipzig, only later in Paris or London) and still to this day overshadows its equally genius sister-piece, the c-minor trio op.66. 00:00 - 09:35 1.
